WELCOME TO PLANET VIRTUAL BOY!

Welcome to the third dimension! On this site you will learn everything about Nintendo's Virtual Reality experiment, the Virtual Boy. Released back in 1995 only in Japan and North America, the system failed all along the line and disappeared from the market less than a year later, quietly and without any official word. Only 22 games were released for the Virtual Boy during its short lifespan. Here we want to build a memorial for this unique oddity of videogame history. Dedicated to its brilliant creator, Gunpei Yokoi.

VB HaxXorz

The whole Virtual Boy scene seems to be infected by the programming-fever at the moment, because after nothing happened concerning VB Programming for about 2 years, several new homebrewn demos have now been released.
It all started 2 weeks ago, when Amos Bieler a.k.a. Runnerpack posted a description on the vgchat.com Virtual Boy Board about how to make a great frontend for the Virtual-E C Compiler out of a text editor called Ultraedit. On the following days Runnerpack's Hello, World! Demo and Lameboyadvance's Veebee Cursor Demo (both based on the Virtual-E Cursor Demo) as well as Frostgiant's Mario Flying Demo (left pic) were released. I couldn't resist the fascination of Virtual Boy coding either and messed around with VECC today. You can download my VB Rocks! Demo by clicking here :)
A nice new tool called VeeBee Charmap, which lets you convert images to VECC-compatible HWord arrays, was also released a few days ago.
If you're now interested in making your own Virtual Boy demos or even games, you should get VeeBee charmap, the Virtual-E C Compiler as well as David Tucker's VB Programmer's Manual and visit the Virtual Boy Board for even more info. All the above demos also contain the respective C source codes, which are very good to learn from. If you also bring along some basic programming skills and some patience, nothing should remain in the way between you and your own VB programs...

Movie Boy

When i was watching TV yesterday and hopping channels from the soccer match Germany - Kuweit to a movie called "Tokyo Eyes" on arte, this guy in the movie suddenly had a Virtual Boy in his hands, then connected a digital camera and let his girlfriend use the VB as a "viewer" for the cam!! Later the Virtual Boy could shortly be seen in the background two more times. Of course I updated the "Virtual Boy in Hollywood" section with the new information. The movie will be aired the next time on 22nd of May, in the evening i guess, so if you can recieve arte, you should start to program your VCR right now :)

Project(s):VB

I'm in the middle of my A-level exams (I hope this is the correct translation of "Abitur") and finally found some spare time to update the site again.
Breaking news of the last weeks were the renaming of Pat's Virtual Boy Page to Project:VB and the announcement of a new Virtual Boy page by a guy called Hangtime! The site, which is tentatively called "Project Fourth Dimension: The Red Dimension" will be about "modding the Virtual Boy and developing for it" and should be launching these days. More soon!
Besides updating the Links, i added some new articlescans from EGM: 11/94, 10/95, 11/95 and 4/96. Some are still waiting to be scanned...
The following two weeks I'll have to prepare mayself for the history examination. I suck at history, so updates will still be rare, sorry ;)

Red Dragon released

After the release of ViBE there has been another cool release called Red Dragon. The emulator by Frostgiant is basically using the Reality Boy 0.7 source code, but adds some enhancements such as GUI layer, save states and reconfigurable keys and is compatible with Windows, DOS and Linux. Also look forward for sound support in future updates! Along with this release I did a major update to the Emulators section.
Furthermore the Highscores section has become a little bit more interesting because of the new Gamer Top10. It lists the 10 most successful highscore hunters, by giving 100 points for a highscore, 70 for a second place, 50 for a third and so on for each game. These points are summed up to get the Top10. Send your highscores to scores@vr32.de to participate :)

ViBE released!

My prayers were heard, yesterday the long-awaited ViBE Virtual Boy emu for Macintosh was surprisingly released! The emulator developed by Richard Bannister und Gil Pedersen had been in the making for quite a long time, but after promising screens and videos it suddenly disappeared from the homepage of the developers a few month ago. It was considered dead by most Virtual Boy fans, so these news are even more pleasing... Hopefully it was no April Fools joke. The present version 1.0b1 is an early release, but it's said to emulate all VB games and updates are also on the way. So, if you're on of those lucky Mac owners, grab your copy now at www.bannister.org.

In other news we now have a chat online, after DogP came up with the idea on the board. Our idea is to install the chat on all Virtual Boy pages to give Virtual Boy fans a chance to meet in a general chatroom. You can also reach it at chat.vr32.de. Let's see how this develops...

Last but not least I want to let you all know that the PHSCologram is not (longer?) for sale.
