Faceball ROM Release and Fundraiser

The wait is already over, bigmak hereby releases the ROM dump of his Niko-Chan Battle (aka Faceball) prototype for everyone's enjoyment! If you don't know what the heck I am talking about, please scroll down two news posts for the (short) full story.

Bigmak is now accepting donations a well. Unlike previously stated, there will not be any complete-in-box reproductions given out in return for donations, due to a lot of bad feedback received from people who simply did not understand what this is all about. Instead, the already produced carts will be given out for free! Details will be made known soon.

Let us all show our appreciation and help bigmak to recoup as much of his huge investment as possible! Click the button below to make a donation.

i call dibs on one of the 'free carts' ... just be sure to let me know how much of a donation it is going to take. I don't want it as a ROM - I want a full cart.

Is it possible to call dibs? Is a free cart for people who donate the most? I'm sorry that this wasn't a full release, but I'll try to donate something. Good work everyone. :)

This entire series of events, from purchase to release, is the type of story that eventually gets printed in a history of video games book. I wouldn't be surprised to see the participants and this site mentioned in some publication 10 years from now.

The community can say thanks all they want but we can never thank you enough for what you did. Someone once described the Virtual Boy as the "little system that could" and to this day I continue to believe that. This release helps us to see just 1 more example of what might have come from generation-2 software, making this an exceptional treat for all.

So once again, Thanks!

Possibly on Wikipedia until some moderator with strict interpretations of various rules comes and deletes the entire passage. ;-)

I'll be happy to donate before the end of the month (that's when people get their salary).

Nevermind that the ROM says V^TETRIS and that it's repeated twice in the downloadable file. It's supposed to be that way.

BTW, Editor sucks, if you accidentally (and not accidentally as well) press preview all your enters are changed into code and aren't changed back when posting - I'm leaving them just to show it.

The originally posted 16MBit ROM was overdumped and contained the same ROM twice. I have replaced it with a clean 8MBit version.

Did the double rom work directly on the FlashBoy?
The 8Mbit version needs to be patched to work there then?

Yea..only I can mess up a dump :D. I have no clue how many times the code was repeated originally. I think I had a 32 or 64 meg file :P

Was freakin out a bit..the file 'played'..but wouldn't fit on a flashboy. We were going to have to design special boards to even be able to play it on hardware.

Mindstorm came to the rescue thou :P

This is QUITE a release!
It is a fun game and my introduction to Faceball series as well.

And I must say it was exciting to see the VB hitting many news sites across the web, as well!

Hope you can get ample fundraiser cushion and that you can keep the actual prototype in your collection for a long time to come!

bigmak, thanks so much for your hard work. When will there be details on the physical carts being given away? I'll be happy to make a donation at the end of the month, but am hoping beyond hope to get a physical cart (I even wrote a letter to Nintendo Power once, as a 12 year old VB enthusiast, begging them to make Faceball for Virtual Boy.) Suffice to say, I've been waiting a long time for this.

I don't know how Eric is going to determine who receives a free cart, but I would hope that preference is given to long-standing Virtual Boy community members, who have shown by their revealed character that they truly appreciate the Virtual Boy a lot, truly appreciate this game, and intend to keep it and cherish it for a long time, especially since they will be getting it for free.

Seriously, if anybody manages to get a free Faceball cart, for the sole purpose of trying to sell it for a large profit soon, you are going to upset a lot of people who will likely be on your case in a heartbeat. It would be an extremely strong slap in the face to Eric, and if there is ever a Virtual Boy Hall of Shame posted online, you deserve to be there.

I'm not charging any specific person with plans to do this, but I know for sure that there must already be people out there who have this intention, and they could very well be posing as "sincere Virtual Boy fans" right now, with the intent to get their greedy hands on one of these.

If anyone here gets any of those items, please PM me.

Doanted! Thanks again bigmak. This was a truly outstanding thing to do for the community. :)

Cheers!

I'm sure bigmak will come up with a good way to distribute the carts. If nothing else, he could print up all of the forum usernames and throw 'em on the floor, mailing the carts to the first XX people that he picks up. :) I'm just happy that someone out there is getting a cart. I certainly wouldn't mind if I were one of 'em, though!

Hopefully, Reloaded will have a normal release.

And if you really want to make your self-made reproduction cart look nice, buy another very cheap Virtual Boy cartridge, and replace the FlashBoy+'s shell that has the hole for the USB port with the new shell that has no USB port hole. Of course, you will likely have to remove the USB connector on the FlashBoy Plus board so that the new shell will fit over it just fine.

Uh oh... now the "secret" is out!

Now this is just the prototype rom..as a thank you to the community. If you want to play the more complete game..faceball: remastered will prob be the best bet.

I think vince is starting to print up the hintbook and poster n stuff..so if you want a cib..he might have them ready to order ..hrms I have no clue :) don't even want to give a date.
