Hey Ben, I have a translation of that page here, which was made a few years ago by a professional translator from Germany now living in Japan. I don't remember the exact details, but we were thinking of paying him for the translation of some Japanese magazines and he was so kind to translate this page as a sample. For some reason the contact broke afterwards. Anyway, here's the translation:

(first right side with blue background, then left side with green background)

Ask the makers!! Virtual Boy survey

What companies are making games for VB? With what kind of feelings are they making VB games? We asked simple questions like that.

Are you making games for VB?
The number of game companies stating clearly that they’re making games for VB is unexpectedly low. Many are still playing wait-and-see.
■Making games (16 companies)
ITC, I’MAX, Asmik, Atlus, Coconuts Japan Entertainment, J-Wing, POW, VAP, Hudson, Banpresto, BPS, Hect, Bottom Up, Right Stuff, and 2 more companies.
■Planning to make games (9 companies)
Epoch, Angel, Naxat, Namco, Bandai, and 3 more companies
■Not planning to make games (5 companies)
■Under consideration (11 companies)
Activision Japan, Enix, Square, Starfish, Tokuma Shoten, Magifact, Masaya, and 4 more companies

What kind of games do you think will come out?
A lot of the answers said “shooting games.” But there were also various other opinions.
“Simulations”, “ports”, “games that can be played for short durations”, “games with simple contents” etc.

Please give us some comments on the VB.
The opinions about the VB were mainly split into 2 groups: approval and slight disapproval.
“Might be able to capture new layers of games;” “I’m anticipating the possibilities;” “The games’ contents might become one-sided;” “I wonder how it looks to our eyes that are used to colored images” etc.

Cool. Well, I already started working on translations for the rest of that page, so I guess I will post my independent translation results here for comparison purposes and not finish doing the rest, since it seems that my translations are in agreement with his.

By the way... have you ever learned of what ITC stands for and, thus, know what game company it refers to?

More English Translations for the Release Calendar Page of the 3D Virtual Boy Magazine:

どんなソフトが出てくると思いますか
What kind of software is going to come out?

なんといっても多かったのはシューティング。ほかにもさまざまな意見が出た。「シミュレータ」、「移植ゲーム」、「短時間で終わるもの」、「単純な内容のもの」、など。
After all was said and done, there are a lot of shooters planned. We also got different opinions on the matter, such as simulators, ported games, games that can be finished in a short period of time, and games with simple content.

超新作究極のVB版先取り大作戦
Ultra-New, Ultimate VB Campaign Ahead!

●アスミックでは、とにかく撃って楽しめる3Dシューティングを出すとのこと。
●At Asmik, they are producing a 3-D shooting game, in which shooting can be enjoyed somehow.

●ヒューマンではファンタジーの世界を舞台としたアクションゲームを開発中。
●At Human, they are developing an action game that is set in a fantasy world.

●バップの『バーチャルダブル役満』は通信対戦可能なものになるらしい。
●Vap’s “Virtual Double Yakuman” is likely to be a game that allows link play.

[Ben’s Note: From this, it seems that the reason why “Virtual Double Yakuman” never got commercially released, though it was under development for such a long time, is clear. They obviously wanted it to be at least a 2-player game and were waiting on Nintendo to commercially release the link cable, which ended up never happening. This also explains why V-Tetris, though it was originally expected to be a launch title, ended up getting delayed, since BPS likely would have wanted it to support the link cable and ended up releasing it as a 1-player-only game once they realized that the link cable wasn’t going to get released any time soon. This also explains why Faceball never got released, since they certainly wanted it to support the link cable and didn’t simply want to release it as a 1-player-only game. It seems that Nintendo being slow / hesitant at mass producing the link cable could have caused several titles never to get commercially released before the plug was pulled on the Virtual Boy.]

●現在発売日未定となっているソフトに関しては、ほとんどのものが年内発売を目標としているとのこと。
●Concerning software for which the release date is not yet decided, most of the developers said that they’re aiming for releases by the end of the year.

MANUFACTURER'S QUESTIONNAIRE (RESULTS)

Manufacturer’s Name: (Response to the) Virtual Boy

I'MAX: Although production has already started, we are learning every day. It’s difficult because, from a technical and sensory standpoint, it requires something different from everything else up until now.

Asmik: In a sense, we were greatly impacted by it. If an interesting project can be conceived within our company, we’d like to attempt it.

Atlus: Since it’s basically a stereoscopic toy, we think that its performance is satisfactory. Therefore, development has now begun, and the release of software could occur in the fall and thereafter.

Coconuts Japan Entertainment: We think that its performance and construction are in accordance with the hardware concept. We are currently in the middle of developing software, but about the release dates and such, these are still undecided.

Compile: Aside from foreign markets, we believe that both its performance and construction are not suitable for the Japanese market. Currently, we are not considering producing any software.

Sammy: We would have liked it to be completely portable in its design. Although we have the intention to produce software, further details are still to be determined.

Shogakukan Productions: We think that the technology and the pricing strategy are as expected. A problem is that the hardware’s characteristics might limit the software variations.

T&E Soft: We think that fun and excitement can now be pursued differently than with software in the past. We are currently developing a shooting game called “Red Alarm.”

Technōs Japan: We think that it is straining on the eyes. As a company, we have no plans to produce Virtual Boy software at the moment.

Tecmo: The game screen gives you the sensation of being in a mysterious, other world. It’s interesting. We feel, however, that its mounted appearance is a bit too far ahead of the times.

Toho: The ability of third parties to supply software and a variety of content are going to be key. As a company, we would like to release software that makes use of Godzilla by the end of the year.

Nihon Bussan: We are currently considering whether or not to produce software. If we decide to begin production, something with a 3-D maze sounds interesting.

Hudson: It can provide a 3-D world, which cannot be experienced with conventional video games. We have already started producing software.

Pony Canyon: We think that it’s one of those items that could be rather fun. If we want to produce something, an adventure game would be nice.

Masaya: Its main body is nice. Although we do not currently plan to enter the market, if we decide to begin production, something like “Tobidasu Aniki” (“Pop-Out! Big Brother”) might be good.

Yanoman: Although it would have been nice if it was a little smaller, we think that it provides fun and excitement that you absolutely cannot get with other hardware.

Some thoughts from Ben about the ads appearing in the back of CoroCoro Comic's Pop-Out! Panic Bomber: Virtual Boy 3D Book:

In the 323rd issue of Famitsu Magazine, dated February 24, 1995, Toho Co., Ltd. said, in response to the manufacturer's questionnaire that they received from Famitsu Magazine, that they were thinking about releasing a game for the Virtual Boy that would make use of Godzilla by the end of that year. This could explain why the 3-D ad for the movie "Godzilla VS Destoroyah" appears in this Virtual Boy-focused book made by CoroCoro Comic. Since "Godzilla VS Destoroyah" was publicly released by Toho on December 9, 1995, one possibility for what transpired is that Toho was waiting to see how much money they would make from the release of their movie, before deciding whether or not it would be a good idea to begin development on the Virtual Boy game that would incorporate Godzilla, which likely would have been based on this particular movie. Thus, since they would have already had plenty of time to see that the Virtual Boy was not doing well commercially by the time of the movie's release, they would have decided not to begin production on the game at all. Nevertheless, at the time that this comic book was being made, Toho may have very well still had plans to produce the Virtual Boy game, which could be why this ad appears in this magazine, in order to get Virtual Boy fans thinking and excited about Godzilla.

(See previous post on this thread for Toho's mention of the Virtual Boy game that would incorporate Godzilla)

As for speculation on the ad for the Racing Mini 4WD machines, there was a video game in development for the Nintendo 64 called "Tamiya Racing." This game ended up never getting released, and very little, and seemingly nothing certain, is known about its origins. Could this ad in the Virtual Boy-focused comic book indicate that the developer who worked on Tamiya Racing for the Nintendo 64 originally wanted the game to be released for the Virtual Boy but then ended up moving the game over to another platform once it was determined that the Virtual Boy would be a commercial failure, as is known to have happened with other games that ended up never getting released for the Virtual Boy, such as in the case of Virtual Jockey?

Well, unless more interesting information appears on unreleased Virtual Boy games, I will now use this thread for any Japanese Virtual Boy stuff that I feel like translating, just to keep all translations in one place and, thus, more easily accessible.

I found the attached high resolution image of the Japanese Mario Clash Poster by performing a Google image search. I'm not the best at removing watermarks, but hey... I tried.

English Translations for Mario Clash Poster:

奥へ手前へたさわぎ!
There's turmoil to the front and to the back!

投げろ! ぶつけろ! 落っことせ!
Throw 'em! Hit 'em! Make 'em fall!

塔の上に住みついた個性豊かな敵たちをノコノコ片手にやっつけろ!
With Koopa Troopa in hand, battle hordes of individuality-rich enemies that have settled at the top of the tower!

おもしろ空間シューティング、バーチャルボーイで新登場!
It's a fun, all-new 3D action and shooting game making its appearance on the Virtual Boy!
