You only need the ones that actually go to the board, so like the second picture you posted.

They are already soldered, but he is talking about hard wiring the display boards without the flex cable, that is something else. It can be done, but is a hellish task.

You could have contacted me about this. I will be in the UK around London the 20th through the 26th of October, maybe could swing by if you live around there (do not have your address quickly to know how close you are to London).

Have you tried pulling out the cable just a little bit? Sometimes the connector parts of the cable are dented in too much for a stable connection. Soldering them onto the board itself is a really hard job, one I started with, but will probably never finish, do not have the patience for that at the moment at least.

If that doesn't solve it, swap them around, if the same display still has issues, it needs a retouch, if not, it is your Virtual Boy's motherboard socket.

I believe this is normal. I have opened a LOT of VBs, and they have all looked similar (although with various amounts of exposed wire).

I think it's just a side-effect of how they prepared the wires for insertion in the connectors. The wires inside are plated, anyway, so it shouldn't affect anything, really.

If you're super-paranoid about it, you could paint on some kind of conformal-coating or liquid electrical tape, but do a neat job, and make sure whatever you use cures thoroughly before you close the VB back up.

This, all the Virtual Boys I have opened all look like what you posted here. I do understand the need for confirmation, but it is nothing to worry about.

Very cool! I am in Japan on vacation for four more days at the moment. Hoped to find something cool about the Virtual Boy that would be affordable, though not that easy to find. Then I read about this, so excited for you! These are the best finds, free, from a close source and unexpected, treasure it!

That sounds bad indeed, not necessarily unfixable, but it isn't right. I cannot tell you what it is exactly, but it sounds as if one of the mirrors is blocked or something like that. Best is to open it up and hear/see where it comes from.

You need to use the really short USB cable for it to work that came with it. Do not use longer cables, those give these kind of issues. I had this happen and solved it by using the short cable that it came with.

Wow, that is one hell of a job well done lol!! I have been contemplating trying this with one of my VB's and a couple of displays that were beyond repair.

What wire did you use? Kynar? And did you use an iron or a special soldering station that uses hot air?

I am still repairing VB displays by the way.
