That definitely shows signs of being a unit used for one of the store display types. Check out this post and below it (especially Post # 14) for some details of other store display units owned by people on this site:

You've definitely got something funky there, very well could be a countertop display unit.

Potential Store Display?

Hello again,

I just recently acquired a Virtual Boy. However, when I was inspecting it closer it looks like it could be a store display unit. When I looked further into it the eyeshade has screws to hold it onto the VB, the clips are still intact. I haven't seen a normal VB with these screws except on this website I noticed some of the the countertop displays have these. I also noticed this extra barcode on the bottom of the unit. As well as this very interesting looking sheet metal plate covering where the stand normally goes. Pictures are attached below but I'm curious if I have a display model or just someone modifying their VB for a certain purpose.

Thanks for everyone being so helpful!
-Cameron

Pictures should be attached!

Okay thanks for the advice. I do have a copy of Wario Land coming in that I snagged for $11. I wish I had thought more when purchasing my VB since it doesn't have the battery pack and they cost half of what I paid for the system! I think I might have a unit from a store display which is interesting, however, I'll make a separate post about that.

Thanks!

What he said, but I'd just pay up for the ac adapter because the thing chews through 6AAs fairly quickly so it's kind of a pain unless you have like 12 rechargeable batteries and can swap between as they refill.

Just grab a Mario Tennis game since it's like $5-10 shipped being the pack-in game.

As far as the infamous eye issue goes, depending on skill level it's either easily repairable in like an hour, or over your head dangerous as it's a thin plastic cable with copper leads through it and easily melted. I can do it, it just takes time and a steady hand.

Unfortunately you'll need a game to see anything on the screen. Without a game you'll hear the vibration of the screen but nothing will display on the screen. You'll a game to properly test. Since you'll need a game anyway I'd suggest getting either the battery pack or a AC tap, no need to mess around with a 9V battery.

Need help testing my VB

Hello,

I'm new to this form and just scored my first Virtual Boy for $70 on eBay. Came with a controller and the stand. However, the listing said that the VB turned on and loads games with the infamous 1 eye out problem. This I've read how to temporarily fix and will do that eventually. However, at this time I don't have a battery pack or AC adapter. I'm new to this console so I assume that I could hook up a 9V battery for quick testing just to see if the VB is as listed. I'm hoping someone can recommend if there is a better way to test this. I'm assuming like every other Nintendo console that without a game plugged in I'll at least get a Nintendo logo on the screen?

Thanks for any adive!

1st - Your rank when you take first in a race.
2nd - Your rank when you take second in a race.
Ranked Out - Your rank when you didn't take 1st or 2nd in a race.
Winning Percentage - The total percentage of first places taken.
1st or 2nd Percentage - This equals the total number of 1st and 2nd places divided by the total number of races run. It's the percentage of 1st or 2nd places taken.
Prize Money - The total amount of money earned in a race. If you take 5th place or better, you will get a prize.
GI - This stands for Grade One. A very important race in racing is called a "high prize race," and this is the grade that is attached to the best race among them. This is where you can show how much you have won.
GII - The abbreviation for Grade Two. Horses aiming for GI often appear here for the sake of stepping up. Here, the number of wins will be displayed.
GIII - The abbreviation for Grade Three. This is a race where a horse aiming to become a top horse appears. Here, too, the number of wins will be displayed.
Leading Jockey - This is what the horseman who has won the most in a year is called. The number of times awarded will be displayed at the end of the year.
Prize King - This is the horseman who earned the most prize money in a year. Of course, the award count will be displayed.
Highest Winning Percentage - The leading jockey, whether the number of races run is high or low, can be awarded this if the number of wins is high enough. A jockey won't be awarded this if the probability of winning is not high for the number of races run.
