This is similar to a report card score attached to each horse. It is written using one letter of the alphabet. "S" is the best, "A" is good, "B" is OK, "C" is not so good. The rank changes depending on the horse's performance, so when you first see it, it might be a "C," but in some cases it becomes an "S" at the end. The letters at the beginning of the alphabet are like ranks ascribed in a race. In racing, they are referred to as "grades." Depending on its ability, a horse can go out in one race but not another.

Similar to how human beings run, horses also have short-distance and long-distance types. There are 4 different distance types:

馬のことよ。
● Sprinter ●
A horse that plays an active part in the short-distance races of 1000 to 1400 meters.

●マイラー●

● Miler ●
A horse which is strong for a short distance, which is good at a race of one mile, that is, 1600 meters.

●ミドルディスタンス●
1800〜2400メートルのレースで活躍するの。
中距離馬とも呼ばれてるのよ。
● Middle-Distance ●
This is active in a race of 1800 to 2400 meters. It is also called a medium-distance horse.

●ステイヤー●
2400メートルを越える長距離戦が得意なの。
● Stayer ●
This is good at long distance races of more than 2400 meters.

These are not absolutes. Sprinters sometimes win at over 1800 meters. But they are usually not good as it goes up to 2500 meters.

4.重馬場
4. Heavy Tracks

「重馬場」っていうのは、雨とかが降った後

On a heavy track, the horse's footing becomes heavy after getting wet from rain. In this game, horses have the symbols of "◎" (strongest), "〇" (strong), "△" (weak), "X" (weakest). "◎" is a power type, so it is not very good when track conditions are nice, while "X" is a speed type, so it is better for this.

気をつけなきゃいけないのは、「芝」と「ダ

You need to be mindful of the differences between the two types of tracks: "Turf" and "Dirt." Turf is easy to run on when it's sunny, but it will be more difficult when it rains. On the contrary, dirt will be easier to run on when it's raining. (A sandy beach is easier to walk on when it's wet than when it's dry, right?)

"All-encompassing"
A horse with this type exhibits all personalities and temperaments. At first, it may not listen to you if you don't use the whip, but as you become better acquainted, it will gradually listen better without having to use it.

Well it could be so nasty inside something is causing a blockage somewhere(s) because you said it's stiff to adjust. The banging could not be crud but misalignment of the mirrors within. It also could be something far worse, a real part failure and not a falling out of alignment issue.

Better really not to speculate without eyes on the inside of it so maybe just wait and take some pictures.

Ahh so it's an on board thing, kind of like how someone would tinker with a pot wheel for consoles like with optical drives and what not. I could see how that could be a time suck, but far better than wasting time and money with replacement parts if it's something of that sort. So that is good to know.

No walk in the park eh? What's involved in actually fixing it because it seemed most figured it was some messed up IC or another mysterious part failure from what I've read.

oh the alignment issue? its a very well hidden adjustment. it only took me fixing 250 consoles to figure it out... but i have to take the console apart and mess with the adjustment wile the game is on to get it to look right. not an easy task...

Yea, Japanese games did not come in a plastic seal. Hard-Off is notorious for encasing everything in cellophane. Gotta keep it fresh~ :)

I just got an as-is Virtual Boy on eBay for cheap and I'm trying to figure out exactly what's wrong with it. When I turn it on the sound comes on but there's no picture, and the left side of the unit vibrates very loudly once every couple of seconds before eventually stopping after about 30 seconds. It won't respond to any button inputs as far as I can tell. I also noticed that the IPD dial is very stiff and difficult to turn. I have a gamebit screwdriver coming in the mail so I'll have to wait for it to arrive before I can open it up and have a better look, but in the meantime does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?
