A Game that Makes a Great Pack-In Title for the System!
Author: Jordan | Date: 2009/01/02 | Rating: 10/10

Ahh tennis, one of the best sports ever conceived. It's one of those sports that's fun to play, but what do you get when you throw in some characters from the Mario series? You get a sports game that's so fun, you'll want to play it until the batteries run dry!

Mario's Tennis for the Virtual Boy is a great game for those who have just picked up the VB controller for the first time. It's graphics and gameplay give the game a friendly appearance, even the music at the startup screen make it seem friendly enough.

You get to choose from two different game modes, "Singles" and "Doubles." Once you choose a game mode, you get to choose a game type, difficulty, sets, and finally the characters. The choice of characters include Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Koopa Troopa, and Donkey Kong Jr. Each character has their own strenghs and weaknesses, depending on their speed and racket contact area.

The "vs. COM" game type is a straightforward match between you and your opponent. You basically play tennis just for fun. The "Tournament" type of gameplay, however, is a little different. You play against random opponents to become the champion.

One of the small downsides to Mario's Tennis is the "Tournament" game type. If you lose, then that's it! Game over! They don't even give you the option to have a rematch. The last downside is winning in the "Tournament" game type. There is no trophy presented on the screen showing that you won or anything amongst that. Instead, it just has some upbeat music on the ranking board with "CONGRATULATION" flashing on the screen. I can't believe that someone forgot to proofread this bfore the game was released on the market! Despite the downsides of the game, Mario's Tennis is a great game for any beginner or Virtual Boy gamer!

Graphics: 10/10

Considering that this was the pack-in title for the Virtual Boy, the graphics for Mario's Tennis are to impress. The tennis courts are rendered identically to Nintendo's Mode 7 graphics on the Super Famicom/SNES, and some of the elements in the backgrounds pop out at you!

Music: 10/10

The music in Mario's Tennis is very catchy and upbeat. The music basically fits any Mario game, and any gamer who has played at least one Mario game will definitely expect this kind of music in Mario's Tennis.

Gameplay and Controls: 10/10

The gameplay and controls in Mario's Tennis are very simplistic and easy to get used to. The game is easy to learn, easy to play, but a bit of a challenge to beat. This makes the game great for any first time Virtual Boy gamers.

Overall 10/10:

Overall, I recommend Mario's Tennis for the Virtual Boy. Nintendo made a great choice of making this game a pack-in title for the Virtual Boy, and I think that this is the game that new VB gamers should start off with!
