A well-done golf game for any system.
Author: Michael Patronik | Date: ? | Rating: 10/10

Golf for the now-defunct Virtual Boy is, in my opinion, the best game available for the system. This is a game for all golfers. It is also the most realistic golf game that I have ever played on a console. T & E obviously put in some research for this jewel of a game.

Graphics 10 out of 10

The graphics are as good as they get on the Virtual Boy. There are a good variety of textures in Golf. You can easily distinguish between rough, fairway, green, sandtrap, etc... It's also very easy to follow the ball with your eyes, unlike TV.

Music and Sound 7 out of 10

Pretty good music for a golf game. It has some catchy tunes. The sound effects are also done very well. They sound very good for sound samples. There's nothing better than hearing the ball plunk in the hole when you finish.

Game Challenge 10 out of 10

It's a golf game. What do you expect? Sometimes you'll want to kiss your Virtual Boy when you sink a 30 foot putt. Other times you'll be on the verge of tossing it out the window when you hit a 5 foot putt too hard. It varies, really. It totally depends on your skill level.

Game Play-Fun 10 out of 10

If you're a golfer, you'll absolutely love Golf. The 3D capabilities of the Virtual Boy make this a perfect game for the system. It's also a good way to practice certain scenarios like being in a sandtrap 10 yards away from the hole that breaks hard to the left. This is also a fun pick-up-and-play game.

It's golf. Need I say more? Golf is the epitome of frustration. But it totally depends
on your skill level. Just like real golf, novices will be endlessly frustrated with this game. But pros will make it look easy. Just remember to take deep breaths and count to 10. Then you can toss your Virtual Boy at a wall.

Replayability 10 out of 10

Golf is a sports game, so it's different every time. The wind will always change. You'll never hit the same shot twice. You can memorize courses, but it'll always be different.

Game Value 10 out of 10

As of the time I wrote this review, Virtual Boy hardware and software is on liquidation. You'll probably find it for $10 or $15 bucks, most places, so Golf is a must-have title. Even back when it was $40 or $50, I'd still buy it.

Use of 3D effects 10 out of 10

Golf makes excellent use of Virtual Boy's 3D capabilities. In fact, if I had to think of a game to make for a virtual reality system, I'd probably settle on a golf game. Considering how far away the pin is makes a difference in this golf game. It also makes good use of different levels on the course. You can really see when there's a steep slope or a steep rise.

Physics 8 out of 10

Very good use of realistic physics. You actually get to decide where you'll strike the ball. This is the only game that I've seen this done in, but I haven't played every golf game. This may be a little unrealistic, but it makes the game a little bit less frustrating. There will also be a few times when you putt the ball a few feet away from the hole, then, for some reason, the ball will catch the side of the hole and go flying away at a higher speed than you hit it. One time I just barely touched it from about 3 or 4 feet away, it caught the side of the hole, then ended up 18 feet away from the hole! Think of the hole as the Earth and the ball as a satellite. That's how we get satellites to go to Jupiter and beyond, by slingshotting them with the Earth's gravity. But that just shouldn't happen in golf.

Overall 10 out of 10

Golf is probably the best of the small selection of games available for Virtual Boy. All are fun, but I like Golf the best. Pick it up if you happen to see it. I guarantee you'll be frustrated by it in some parts, but you'll also be very satisfied by it. A well-done golf game for any system.
