In other words, there is no difference but I'd like you to think that there might be and shell out a grand for this little piece of plastic that isn't unique and I have two others of.

Sorry if I'm being blunt.
I think you're totally right. If there were any differences to the final version, it would not be a problem to provide some screenshots as a proof.
I did, he has one more Panibon and a Jack Bros proto.
They're not listed but he said they're for sale - he (she?) hasn't noticed any differences though from the retail games.
To me that makes them worth about 100 as a curiosity item. I see value in old alpha builds of things like Rockman with an extra stage, or the Sonic 2 Beta for example with hidden extras, but a final build with a couple extra bugs has no interest to me.
I work with pre-final builds all the time so these kinds of things don't offer me personally any real insight to a game's design or such. They're basically expensive flawed versions and in the current economy, people are looking to offload them for triple what they bought them for when we were all in a boom.
In my world that just doesn't fly, but maybe someone will bite. If he had an offer button it might get a few nibbles.
Hope I'm not offending anyone here - this is just my view on protos. Whoever buys it might be better to dump it and fund, but I'm not really fussed myself. I've seen the whole lifecycle of protos over on NintendoAge and it leaves a nasty taste in the mouth to see ludicrous prices.

That description from the seller doesn't even make any sense... He's trying to say that the game might be different solely because the ROM of it has never been dumped? How does that make any sense? It sure sounds like he's never even played the thing that he has in his possession. Surely a serious collector would have played the game to death and compared it to the standard version to see if there were any differences. And it also sounds like he cares so little about the game that he doesn't even want to take the time to play it and test it.
Either way, his description sure helps to keep bidders off of it, along with the price.
Proto sellers know that the value of a proto is determined by how early / what differences are in the code.
Trying to suggest that there *might* be differnces, while disclaiming that there's no certainty is not going to encourage anyone to part with $100, let alone $1000.
I've seen this whole thing before. When there are real differences they're shouted about, as that's what drives interest. This is just a final or late beta game at best.
If it was starting @ $100, someone might throw a bid in but like you say the description, the disclaimers and lack of good feedback (and fair share of bad) is making this dead in the water.
I asked what differences there were and if it was tested and got an amusing response back.
i am still reading this forum haha, but seriously as krisse knows i am verry busy never had the time to test the fully. i own a gamestore in the netherlands and working almost always 7 days a week. wish i had the time to test them...
so any questions can be answered by just asking me.
i also asked krisse to drop by sometime to make a dump and compare the data , i am still open for any help regarding this to find out if there is anything different and to help the scene.
as you look back into the old post you can find what i payed but the shippingcosts and tax made them a little bit expensiver. and i want atleast my own money with a little proffit ofcourse :) i am open for any serious offers.
i also have 4 final snes roms less interesting but still interesting becouse super metroid and mega man x is included
